On this day in 1977, President Jimmy Carter welcomed Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the shah of Iran (second from right) and his wife, Farah, to Washington for two days. Carter and Pahlavi discussed improving relations between the two countries, peace prospects for the Middle East and the energy crisis that had hit the U.S. and other Western nations in the early 1970s. But two years later Islamic fundamentalists overthrew the shah and took Americans hostage in Tehran, thus souring relations between the two countries.
