The inspector general community in government is short by twelve members.

The Project on Government Oversight tracking vacancies in the ranks of the agency independent watchdogs. The group notes that IGs are relied upon to “hold agencies and individuals accountable for wrongdoing, identify a need for legislation and evaluate the effectiveness of government programs and policies. ”

Jake Wiens, a POGO investigator, joined In Depth with Francis Rose to discuss why having a permanent IG is important and beneficial for agencies.

Wiens also discussed the difference between IGs who are political appointees vs. those who are career employees.
