Air Force’s cyber commander calls for ‘full-spectrum’ defense of networks

Maj. Gen. Suzanne Vautrinot, 24th Air Force

Maj. Gen. Suzanne Vautrinot, the Air Force’s commander of the 24th Air Force and Air Force’s Cyber Air Component to USCYBERCOM, stressed the importance of a “full-spectrum” approach to cybersecurity.

Speaking at the National Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, Colo., earlier this week, Vautrinot explained that offense, defense and exploitation must be taken into account when protecting the military’s networks.

“The defense can make a huge difference,” she said. “And it makes the difference by understanding what is happening on the field of play and getting in front of it before a play can form.”

Vautrinot compared her division’s forensic operations to replaying game tapes before football games. Watching the “signature” of cyberterrorists allows them to predict the next move and to get one step ahead.
