Lawmakers face $1 trillion decision

Congress faces no good options in dealing with the $1 trillion pricetag of funding government through next year.

Congress must figure out how to fund government through next year at a pricetag of $1 trillion.

Politico reports that lawmakers have three options: an omnibus bill, a yearlong CR that keeps agencies funded at current levels or a short-term resolution that would “punt everything to the new Congress”

An omnibus bill would open Democrats to Republican criticism that the bill was “cooked up behind closed doors.” But a CR would still cost more than $1 trillion to fund government through next September.

Some conservative Republicans want a short-term CR until early next year, but then the new Republican House majority would have to deal with both this year’s and next year’s budget.

The deadline on the current CR is Dec 3.
