  • The Iranian Foreign Ministry recently confirmed that it provided financial assistance to Afghanistan, explaining the money was for development and reconstruction. A ministry spokesman said Tehran was providing the aid for infrastructure to remove the need for foreign military presence in Afghanistan. He said the previous government provided this aid and additional funding will continue. Initially Iran denied the New York Times story that revealed the payments. After a brief period of reflection and gauging international reaction to the story, Iran found its interests best served by admitting their financial support - but with a positive spin.

  • Indian authorities are concerned that militant Kashmiri separatists could launch attacks during President Obama\'s upcoming visit in order to draw the world\'s attention to the region. India is on alert to prevent attacks like the incident in which militants in Kashmir killed 35 people in 2000 during then-U.S. President Clinton\'s visit. A study conducted a few years ago showed that in the past 10 years, almost every time a US or UK senior official visited India or Pakistan, the Kashmiri militants tried to execute a sensational attack intended to raise awareness about their complaints; however it has always backfired by showing the militants to be terrorists and criminals.

  • South Korea and the United States have canceled the planned joint naval exercise in the Yellow Sea scheduled for late October, according to a senior South Korean official. The decision was made to avoid irritating neighboring countries and to improve conditions for the Group of 20 Summit in Seoul on November 11th & 12th. The cancellation appears to be a conciliatory gesture to China to ensure its participation in the G 20 summit. This is the second major security issue in Asia in which the US appears to have deferred to China\'s sensibilities. 2010 has been as a pivotal year for reassessing the dominant power in Asia.
