  • According to Japanese lawmakers, the opposition Liberal Democratic Party is considering legislation that would add territorial policing to the responsibilities of the Maritime Self-Defense Force, following the recent dispute with China over the Senkaku Islands. The legislation would empower the naval force to respond to territorial violations by foreign aircraft and ships. Under current law, the Self-Defense Force can only respond to armed attacks against Japan or domestic unrest. Maritime disputes are not over, and the Japanese are adding naval firepower to their side for future incidents. The ruling coalition led by the Democratic Party has not commented.

  • South Korea participated fully for the first time in the Proliferation Security Initiative by hosting a multinational naval drill aimed at preventing the transfer of weapons of mass destruction. North Korean officials have described South Korea\'s participation as an \"open declaration of war,\" a propaganda statement that makes conditions appear more dangerous than they are. However, until now South Korea has been hesitant to participate in Proliferation Security Initiative activities precisely because they increase the likelihood of a confrontation with North Korea. Their participation this time is a reaction to the sinking of the corvette Cheonan earlier this year.

  • Politics in Pakistan is being shaken up due to some bewildering statements made by high-level Pakistani officials that were quoted in Bob Woodward\'s new Book \"Obama\'s Wars.\" The published comments raise serious questions about the officials\' motives and judgment about permitting US military operations within Pakistan\'s borders. The revelations are an embarrassment to Prime Minister Gilani and the Foreign Minister who have been vocal in criticizing US cross-border operations, even though many comments and decisions were made before Parliament assumed power in Pakistan. The shockwaves have just begun to ripple through Pakistani politics.
