Veterans remembered on POW/MIA Recognition Day

Today, the nation recognizes the sacrifices of prisoners of war and those missing in action.

To date, more than 83,000 enlisted men and women are missing in action, according to the Defense Prisoner of War and Missing Personnel Office.

The number of missing include men and women who served in World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War, the Vietnam War and Desert Storm, according to DPMO.

Each year, thousands of specialists scour foreign battlefields and burial sites to locate information about missing Armed Forces members, according to a White House statement.
