Rob Carey is following Dave Wennergren for a third time.

Carey will become the new Defense Department deputy chief information officer as of Oct. 24, taking over from Wennergren, who will be the new assistant deputy chief management officer. He also took over for Wennergren as the Navy deputy CIO and CIO.

A government source confirmed Carey’s new role and that he’s leaving the Navy’s Fleet Cyber Command.

Carey moved from the cyber command on Sept. 13, after more than three years as the Navy’s CIO.

The source, who requested anonymity because DoD is expected to issue a press release next week, said Carey was selected by incoming Defense CIO Teri Takai.

Takai is expected to join DoD shortly.

The source said this is a natural step for Carey, especially as DoD expects to strengthen the CIO’s role as part of their reorganization.
