Fiddler crabs play an important role in marsh food chains, feeding on algae, bacteria and decaying marsh plants. In turn, they are a favorite food of clapper rails and other marsh birds. The distinctive large claw is used to attract a mate and defend territory. (Credit: Marcia Pradines Long)
