Safety experts are asking the federal government to help foreign governments improve food and drug safety.

The Institute of Medicine said the Food and Drug Administration, Agriculture Department and other agencies should pony up some resources to batten down the hatches on imports.

Dr. Jim Riviere, one of the authors of the committee report, told The Federal Drive with Tom Temin and Emily Kopp Monday that the committee spent more than a year collecting data from more than a dozen countries.

“We came to the realization that the size of the imports of drugs and foods coming into the U.S. are just growing and growing and growing and that FDA alone can’t do it,” Riviere said.

The committee is also calling on the U.S. to help private groups make cheap technology for other countries.
