Federal program managers and CIO staffs are increasingly turning to big data and data analytics to assess performance, improve service, and ferret out wastes, fraud and abuse. Besides the data generated by their own systems of record, agencies are ingesting data from external sources – other government agencies or industry – and from internet-of-things deployments.

Successful participation in the data revolution requires the right analytics tools and storage-and-retrieval technologies. But that’s only half the battle. They also need training and, often, an alteration of business processes. In short, a cultural change.

Federal News Radio, in conjunction with Jacobs, discussed these issues with a panel of federal data practitioners. They described their own data approaches and suggested ideas that could work in any agency.

Something that’s a little unusual … is that we have essentially an internet in space. We’re operating all of the nodes on various planets and our various space assets. And we currently have that internet up and operational and growing. We consider that as an opportunity to deploy a sort of internet-of-things in space.
