The importance of leadership development

June 12, 2017 – Host Bob Leins and co-host John Elliott welcome Tom Fox, Vice President of Leadership and Innovation for Partnership for Public Service, a non-profit, nonpartisan organization that strives for a more effective government for the American people.

Despite the lean times that lie ahead, the great challenges facing our nation and the need for more effective government call out for investing in the development of leaders. Many executives are too busy to consider ongoing professional development, but the most effective executives recognize that continuous learning is essential to high performance.

  • According to our “Best Places to Work in the Federal Government” results, leadership is the most important factor influencing federal agency performance and government effectiveness.
  • While Best Places to Work effective leadership scores rose between 2015 (51.6) and 2016 (53), effective leadership has continuously been one of the lowest-rated workplace categories.
  • Best in class private-sector organizations understand that improved employee engagement leads to better performance and improved outcomes.
  • The most significant investment in leadership development should be the time current leaders are spending developing an agency’s future leaders.  This is one area that won’t require new appropriations, but will require a renewed commitment on the part of senior leadership.
