SSA working on $750M computer center replacement

BALTIMORE (AP) – The Social Security Administration is embarking on a $750 million project to replace its national computer center.

The Baltimore-based agency got $1 billion in the federal stimulus package. Half is intended for the computer project and the other half for reducing a backlog in disability claim processing.

Social Security Administration Commissioner Michael Astrue says the new funds could mean hiring thousands in Baltimore and nationwide.

Astrue says they’re considering locations within a 40-mile radius since electrical power and data linkages could be problematic if the distance from headquarters were greater.

About 1,000 people work at the computer center, but one official estimated that only 60 to 80 employees would be needed at the new facility.
