Meals on Wheels has provided a lifeline to millions of homebound seniors living across America for decades. When COVID-19 hit, imposing its greatest threat on the elderly, Meals on Wheels stepped up and scaled its services, practically overnight, to enable another million plus seniors to safely shelter in place. And yet, as the pandemic’s end may cautiously be in sight, their work has just begun.
The financial toll of the heroic pandemic effort is expected to take up to three years to recover from. Dramatically higher costs of food and transportation, along with investments in PPE and other safety protocols, were necessary and life-saving. Add that to the fact that the senior population in America is projected to double by 2060 and you can see that these local community programs are facing an uphill battle to keep our senior neighbors and loved ones safe in their own homes. That’s why they need your help.
Meals on Wheels America is the leadership organization supporting the more than 5,000 of these community-based programs across the country. Its vast network, serving virtually every community in America, along with more than two million staff and volunteers, delivers the nutritious meals, friendly visits and safety checks that enable America’s seniors to live nourished lives with independence and dignity at home. By providing funding, leadership, education, research and advocacy support, Meals on Wheels America empowers its local member programs to strengthen their communities, one senior at a time.
