OPM continues to chisel away at retirement backlog

The Office of Personnel Management made progress for the fourth month in a row on its backlog of retirement claims.

The Office of Personnel Management increased the number of retirement claims processed on time for the fourth month in a row, according to the department’s most recent backlog report released Oct. 5.

The department processed 70.1 percent of its claims within 60 days, according to OPM’s September report, compared to 69.6 percent in August.

The backlogged inventory stands at 14,706 claims, the report stated, down from 16,350 the prior month.

OPM processed 7,944 claims in September. It received 6,300 claims that month.

The backlog  of claims spiked to its highest level in July, when OPM’s inventory soared from 14,511 claims to 16,455.

OPM began in May 2014 to track the number of claims it processed within two months.

The number of claims processed rose from 80.2 percent to 81.6 percent between January and March, but in April the percentage dropped to 72.6 percent. That percent-processed number dropped again between April and May to 68 percent but has incrementally risen since June.

This report shows retirement statistics for September 2015.
