Pentagon needs more data to save money

Defense Department officials have identified tens of billions in potential savings, but a lack of data is hampering their ability do anything about it.

The Defense Department may house the most powerful military ever known. But it also houses the world’s biggest bureaucracy. All those people in that five-sided building — it’s expensive. DoD officials have identified tens of billions in potential savings. But they can’t seem to get there. Part of the problem is lack of data, according to the Government Accountability Office. John Pendleton, director of defense capabilities and management issues at the GAO, has more on Pentagon Solutions.

The race is on in NIPRNet/SIPRNet Cyber Security Architecture Review. The Defense Information Systems Agency and the DdD chief information officer are taking a comprehensive review of two networks. The Secure and Nonsecure IP networks known as SIPRNET and NIPRNET. Pete Dinsmore, the risk technology executive at DISA, explains the goals for NSCSAR and how they’ll get there.
