A series of leaders had come and gone for several years. A day after the Biden administration started, it appointed Yolanda Lopez — who had been removed from her job as news director only a week earlier — as acting VOA director. Since then, employee engagement scores rose 13 points from below average to above average. Now Lopez is a finalist in this year’s Service to America Medals program.
