CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — The Latest on Myrtle Beach Invitational (all times local):
Aubrey Dawkins hit five 3-pointers and finished with 21 points to help UCF rally from an 11-point deficit and beat Western Kentucky 78-62 on Sunday night in the championship game of the Myrtle Beach Invitational.
Tacko Fall, a 7-foot-6 senior, and B.J. Taylor each scored 13 for UCF (4-1). Taylor was scoreless on 0-of-7 shooting in the first half before making 3 of 4 from the field, including both of his 3-point shots, and 5-of-7 free throws after the break.
Dawkins hit back-to-back 3s to open the second half to give the Knights a 34-32 lead, their first of the game. Charles Bassey answered with a jumper but a dunk and then a jumper by Fall sparked an 11-2 run that made it 45-36 after another dunk by Fall with 15:51 to play. WKU (3-2) scored seven of the next 10 points to pull within five about four minutes later but would get no closer.
Bassey scored 13 of the Hilltoppers’ first 17 points as they built an 11-point lead midway through the first half. The 6-11 freshman finished with a season-high 25 points and 10 rebounds and has three double-doubles in five career games.
Junior Lamont West had seven 3-pointers and 27 points — both career highs — and Sagaba Konate had 15 points and nine rebounds before fouling out late, helping West Virginia beat Saint Joseph’s 97-90 on Sunday for third place in the Myrtle Beach Invitational.
West made 5 of 6 3-pointers in the first half and scored 17 points to help West Virginia build a 51-49 lead. The teams combined to make 17 3-pointers in the first half and both shot over 53 percent from the field. Saint Joseph’s led 64-62 before West Virginia went on a 14-5 run, capped by West’s open 3-pointer in transition, for a 76-69 lead with 10 minutes to go. West made six of his first eight 3-point attempts and finished 7 of 11.
Esa Ahmad chipped in with 12 points — all in the second half — for West Virginia (2-2). The Mountaineers were again without James “Beetle” Bolden, who was helped off the floor in their opener with 4:43 remaining after scoring a career-high 21 points.
Lamarr Kimble, who didn’t score in 29 minutes in a loss on Friday, scored a career-high 31 points for Saint Joseph’s (3-2). The Hawks’ leading scorer this season, Charlie Brown Jr., added 18 while battling foul trouble.
Brown picked up his fourth foul with 13:55 remaining in the second half and teammates Anthony Longpre, Taylor Funk and Pierfrancesco Oliva each had three with 12 minutes left. Brown came back in with 9:01 to go, trailing 79-69, and lasted until the 8:07 mark after picking up an offensive foul on a fast break.
West Virginia has the week off before hosting Valparaiso on Saturday. Saint Joseph’s also plays Saturday at William & Mary.
Khalil Ahmad set career highs with eight 3-pointers and 40 points, helping Cal State Fullerton beat Monmouth 87-63 on Sunday for seventh place in the Myrtle Beach Invitational.
Ahmad made a career-high 13 field goals, on just 22 attempts, and also had five rebounds and four steals.
Kyle Allman Jr. added 13 points for Cal State Fullerton (2-3), and Jackson Rowe had 10 rebounds and a career-high four blocks. The Titans made 13 of 27 3-pointers.
Cal State Fullerton led 52-22 at halftime after making 9 of 13 3-pointers and holding Monmouth to 20.7 percent shooting. Ahmad tied his career high with his sixth 3-pointer, and he had 29 points at the half.
Deion Hammond led Monmouth (0-6) with 15 points. The Hawks were 3 of 21 from distance and 24 of 29 at the free-throw line.
Freshman Jaylen Hoard had 16 points and 10 rebounds, Brandon Childress added 12 points with five assists and Wake Forest held off Valparaiso 69-63 on Sunday in the fifth-place game of the Myrtle Beach Invitational.
Childress’ 4-point play with 5:12 left started a 9-2 run and freshman Sharone Wright Jr. capped it with a 3-pointer for a 65-56 lead. Childress made two free throws with 24 seconds left to cap the scoring. Valpo missed a 3-pointer and after Wake Forest missed the front end of a one-and-one, the Crusaders were off on two 3-point attempts.
Freshman Isaiah Mucius chipped in with 13 points and Wright also scored 12 points for Wake Forest (3-1). Hoard has finished in double-figure scoring in all four games this season. The Demon Deacons led 33-30 at the break, with their freshmen scoring 25.
Derrik Smits led Valparaiso (2-2) with 23 points, on 9-of-16 shooting, and seven rebounds.
UCF and Western Kentucky will play for the championship on the final day of the Myrtle Beach Invitational.
The tournament resumes Sunday with four games after a one-day break. The last game features UCF and Western Kentucky after the teams’ semifinal wins Friday.
Wake Forest and Valparaiso meet in the fifth-place game to start the day, followed by Cal State Fullerton and Monmouth playing for seventh. West Virginia and St. Joseph’s will meet in the third-place game.
