Federal employees' overall satisfaction with their jobs fell for the fourth year in a row. That's according to the annual Best Places to Work in the Federal Government rankings from the Partnership for Public Service and Deloitte. The Partnership noted a big problem for the government is that private sector job satisfaction is up. Sean Morris is director of Federal Human Capital Practice at Deloitte. On In Depth with Francis Rose, he explained the rankings and what they mean for your agency.

As the Duke of York used to say, "When you're up, you're up. And when you're down, you're down." The Partnership for Public Service and Deloitte released this year's version of the "Best Places to Work in the Federal Government" Tuesday. The news is, as the Duke of York also said, "When you're halfway up, you're neither up nor down." Max Stier is the president and CEO of the Partnership for Public Service. He joined Tom Temin on the Federal Drive to discuss the big takeaways from this year's list.

We'll soon find out which agencies made the 2014 Best Places To Work in the Federal Government list. The Partnership for Public Service is scheduled to release the annual survey next Tuesday (Dec. 9). As anticipation builds, John Palguta, vice president for public policy at the Partnership joined Tom Temin on the Federal Drive with some action items for agency managers in advance of the release.

More than half of senior executives surveyed by the Senior Executives Association are reporting "low" or "very low" morale with their jobs. The problem lies with a pay-for-performance system where some supervisors make less money than the people they lead. Increasing numbers of senior executive service members are ready to leave the federal government altogether.

NASA, the Surface Transportation Board and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation share a common trait that led them to the top ranking for their size class in the Partnership for Public Service's seventh annual Best Places to Work survey.
