Will cuts to e-gov fund hurt collaboration?
A deep cut to the e-gov funds for government transparency websites could impact collaboration between agencies and with the public.
When he took office in 2008, President Obama said he wanted his administration to be the most transparent ever. In a memo to federal agencies, the President called on agencies to increase collaboration with businesses, not-for-profits and citizens.
But a deep cut to the e-gov funds for government transparency websites could impact collaboration between agencies and with the public.
Federal News Radio reports that the six-month spending bill passed last week included $8 million for the fund, in contrast to the $34 million Congress approved for 2010 (which would be $17 million for six months.)
The e-gov fund pays for open government sites, such as Data.gov, USAspending.gov and the IT dashboard, tracking federal IT spending.
The decisions have yet to be made about which sites will go dark and which will stay online. Federal News Radio reports that Federal Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra told a Senate committee hearing last week, “This is very recent news, and we haven’t had a chance to sit down and actually prioritize systems.”
