EPA names Apps for Environment winners

The winning app for the Environmental Protection Agency\'s Apps for the Environment Challenge helps people find the right light bulb for their homes.

The winning app for the Environmental Protection Agency’s Apps for the Environment Challenge helps people find the right light bulb for their homes.

The app was one of five winners that aimed to address environmental and public health issues, according to an EPA release.

“Innovators from across the country have used information to help people protect our health and the environment,” said Malcolm Jackson, EPA’s chief information officer in a statement. “The winners of the Apps for the Environment challenge demonstrate that it’s possible to transform data from EPA and elsewhere into applications that people can use.”

The apps challenge addresses EPA Administrato Linda Jackson’s seven priorities for the agency’s future, including taking action on climate change, improving air quality and cleaning up communities.

The winners are:

Best overall app: Light Bulb Finder

Runner-up, best overall: Hootroot

Best student app: EarthFriend

Runner-up, best student: Environmental Justice Participatory Mapping
