Fraud.

It’s the middle name of one of the government’s main nemeses: waste, fraud and abuse.

Today is the opening day of a conference devoted to rooting out and solving fraud in the federal government, hosted by the the Association of Government Accountants

The Internal Control and Fraud Conference, is being held at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. through Tuesday.

But don’t let the seemingly staid name fool you. The conference will host a series speakers and topics, including how-to’s on data mining and fraud detection as well as a keynote speech on how to be a human lie-detector.

AGA President Relmond Van Daniker joined the Federal Drive with Tom Temin and Amy Morris to discuss the conference, the intersection of fraud and technology and how federal managers can also benefit from better fraud-detection efforts.

“Whether it’s fraud or waste or abuse, it’s money that we could be using for the taxpayers that we just don’t have because it’s going to the wrong people [or] it’s going to the wrong item,” Van Daniker said.
