The shooting of a Transportation Security Officer at the Los Angeles International Airport has some saying security officers need more protection themselves. The American Federation of Government Employees represents airport screeners. It is advocating for a new class of officers who carry weapons. National security lawyers defended NSA surveillance programs in a rare public forum yesterday. They largely argued against any greater checks on the agency’s ability to collect phone records, saying additional procedures would ground the process to a halt. They spoke before the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board. It’s an independent panel tasked with reviewing the National Security Agency’s programs. David Medine is the chairman.

One fallout from ongoing revelations about the National Security Agency could be the nature of the director’s job. Gen. Keith Alexander oversees both the NSA and Cyber Command. He’s retiring next spring, which gives the Pentagon the opportunity to recast the role. The Hill Newspaper’s Brendan Sasso has been writing about this.

The Homeland Security Department is at odds with some in the private sector. The disagreement is over a second plan to secure private sector critical infrastructure systems.
