Federal workforce by the numbers: Who they are and where they work
Nearly half of the federal workforce is over age 50
According to recent data from the Office of Personnel Management and compiled by the Partnership for Public Service, 45 percent of the federal workforce is over the age of 50. Just more than 6 percent of the workforce is under the age of 30, with 1.2 percent of federal employees between ages 20-to-24. According to the data, agencies are still struggling to recruit federal employees out of college or new to the professional workplace.
Ahead of Public Service Recognition Week, the federal community will remind Americans that the employees who serve them are a diverse group of people who live and work throughout the country.
