The complexity of adding mobile devices to federal networks makes them more susceptible to IT problems. That's according to a survey of federal network managers by MeriTalk. They say virtualization, complex mobile systems, and cloud computing are causing network disruptions that prevent agencies from carrying out their missions. The network managers believe they can cut the complexity of their agency's network in half, which they say could reduce their agency's IT spending by 20 percent.

The latest guide to mobile forensics from the National Institute of Standards and Technology adds hundreds of new tools for investigators to find and collect information from a mobile device. The additions come seven years after NIST first published its Guidelines on Mobile Device Forensics. To give some context, that guide came out BEFORE Apple released the first iPhone. The guide includes as many ways to keep a phone running when it has low battery to save as much data as possible. NIST plans to publish the final version later this year.

When it comes to adopting mobile computing, the Defense Department moves about as fast as a Sherman tank in the mud. It wants to get things just right so mobile devices don't compromise network security. One hurdle for software vendors is the Security Technical Implementation Guide, or STIG.
