2. Unconventional career paths go unrewarded.
Lt. Joseph Riley, the top nationally ranked ROTC cadet in 2013 and a Rhodes Scholar, learned he might be forced out of the Army because he studied at Oxford University rather than taking more military-sanctioned jobs like his peers.
Likewise, Capt. Jim Perkins chose to get his M.B.A. at Georgetown University. The Army paid for him to get that degree, and now Perkins said the Army is about to release him from duty with severance pay.
