Back in Navy's Hands Francis Hamilton, second from left, donated a sword from his private collection to the U.S. Navy Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2014, during a ceremony at the Washington Navy Yard.
Hamilton is the descendant of British Army Gen. Robert Ross, who received the sword from U.S. Navy Commodore Joshua Barney.
As part of the 1814 defense of Washington, Barney led 600 sailors and Marines against British invaders in the Battle of Bladensburg. His troops were eventually overrun, and Barney, who was injured, surrendered his sword to Ross.
