Clearing the Channel Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star grooms a channel for U.S. supply ships near McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. The Polar Star is the nation's only active heavy icebreaker capable of breaking through the thick Antarctic ice, which can be 20-feet thick in places. Polar Star's crew is underway in support of Operation Deep Freeze 2015, part of the U.S. Antarctic program, managed by the National Science Foundation.
