Lois Ethelyn Krum was a Marine Corps corporal during World War II. She was stationed in Arlington, Virginia and then St. Alban’s Naval Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. She is the grandmother of Federal News Radio reporter Meredith Somers.
Krum was married to Lt. j.g. Edward M. Elliott, who was part of the Naval Academy’s “3-year wonder” class, which graduated in three years so they could get them out to the field.
As was the practice at the time, Krum was considered a “BAM,” which stood for either “Beautiful American Marine” or “Broad Ass Marine,” depending on who was speaking.
