Office of Naval Research rolls out new technology

140814-N-PO203-1020 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (Aug. 14, 2014) An unmanned 11-meter cabin rigid hulled inflatable boat (RHIB) from Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock operates autonomously during an Office of Naval Research(ONR)-sponsored demonstration of swarmboat technology held on the James River in Newport News, Va.

During the demonstration scenario unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) operate autonomously escorting a high-value unit while unmanned high-speed maneuvering surface targets (HSMSTs), background, from Atlantic Targets and Marine Operations in Patuxent River, Md., simulate blocking access to a port facility.
