The U.S. military is watching Mali very carefully. Five African presidents seeking to restore Mali\'s elected government are now meeting in Ivory Coast, after the planes carrying the heads of state to Bamako were forced to turn around because demonstrators supporting the military junta took over the tarmac, officials said. The presidents of Ivory Coast, Benin, Liberia, Niger and Burkina Faso were due to arrive in Mali on Thursday to press for the departure of the junior officers that grabbed power in a coup last week, reversing over two decades of democratic rule.

The Defense Department is sponsoring a new challenge that it hopes will serve two purposes - getting its future workforce better educated on science, technology, engineering and math, and coming up with innovative ways to use mobile technology in DoD. The challenge runs through June. The Pentagon wants mobile app developers to submit entries designed to help overcome common misconceptions in science. The contest is sponsored by the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative, a research and development office within DoD.
Federal agencies could and should be doing more to bridge the gap between public health and primary medical care in local communities. That\'s according to a new report from the Institute of Medicine. Researchers say agencies like the CDC and the Health Resources and Services Administration should take advantage of new authorities in the Affordable Care Act to integrate the missions of public health officials and primary care practicioners. Doing so would help prevent disease and provide a better-trained workforce, the institute says.
