President Barack Obama just established a National Strategic Computing Initiative. Three agencies will lead the way: Energy, Defense and the National Science Foundation. The initiative calls for strong collaboration with academic and private partners. The work at one supercomputing facility is an example of what can be achieved through that collaboration. With a grant from the National Science Foundation, the Center for Computational Research has developed a supercomputer management tool that's being used to improve performance and limit backlogged requests at industry, academic and government supercomputing facilities. Now they have plans to make it even better. Dr. Tom Furlani is director of the University at Buffalo's Center for Computational Research. He joined Jason Miller on the Federal Drive with more.

The federal government is falling behind in its efforts to hire a new cohort of cybersecurity experts. And agencies can't keep up with the perks some top-tier private companies offer. That's according to research the Partnership for Public Service and Booz Allen Hamilton put out earlier this year. A few agencies recently hosted the winners of the National Collegiate Defense Cyber Competition to show them what they might expect from a government job. More now from Federal News Radio's Emily Kopp.
The Office of Management and Budget just posted the latest data from its 30-day cyber sprint. Alan Paller of the SANS Institute and a task force of industry experts offer their insight on what are the next steps agencies should be taking to improve their cybersecurity.

The global cybersecurity market is currently a $107 billion industry. That value is expected to jump nearly 10 percent each year to $170 billion by 2020. Cybersecurity is a growing priority for agencies across the federal government from defense and the industrial sector, down to food and agriculture. But one big factor all agencies need to consider weaving cybersecurity into as they plan for the future is real estate. Joe Brennan is managing director for the Government Investor Services team at Jones Lang LaSalle. He tells In Depth with Francis Rose how current cybersecurity laws and initiatives will shape federally leased real estate.
For agency managers responsible for cybersecurity, the last few weeks have been challenging. The data breach affecting millions might have been the direct responsibility of the Office of Personnel Management, but the response has been all-of-government - starting with the now-concluded 30-day cyber sprint. Cyber is a matter of technology, skill and people. Alan Paller, the director of research at the SANS Institute, joined Jared Serbu on the Federal Drive to offer some perspective on what CIOs and cybersecurity officers need to do next.
Karen Evans, former OMB administrator for e-government and IT, encourages federal executives to understand how this case could affect the public sector “Bring Your Own Device” space.
