It makes no sense to call this Labor Day. A better title, according to Senior Correspondent Mike Causey, would be Day When Not So Many People Labor. But if you\'re...
When you think about it, today actually should be called Day When Not So Many People Have to Labor, right?
Makes sense.
But it’s awkward and it would screw up calendars and, if they have them, Labor Day cards. The latter are probably in great demand amongst folks who know who Samuel Gompers was. Also probably the ACLU or somebody would sue. So Labor day it is. And it’s a federal holiday.
While much of the government and big chunks of the private sector have the day off, millions of people, folks who work retail, medical personnel, cops (and robbers), lifeguards and people involved in national security are on the clock. Some will put in a 9 to 5 day. Others will work much longer and also do split shifts that are hard on both the digestion and sleep cycle. Not to mention marriages!
As always on a holiday, we’d like to hear what you are doing, and where you are and why – if you can give out that information. Maybe you are on a terrorist watch. Or simply at work because your obnoxious brother-in-law and family have taken over your house. Or maybe you are like many, many folks who find that holidays are the time when they can get the most work done.
Meantime, have a nice Labor Day while you are laboring.
Is there anybody there????
