President Barack Obama is going to name a replacement for outgoing Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel. The White House expects to formally nominate former Deputy Defense Secretary Ash Carter to lead the Pentagon later this week. Bill Greenwalt is a visiting fellow at the Marilyn Ware Center for Security Studies at the American Enterprise Institute. According to the Associated Press, President Barack Obama has chosen Ashton Carter as his nominee to be next Defense secretary, putting him in line to take over for Chuck Hagel who resigned last week. Carter has served in the past as both the Deputy Secretary of Defense and as the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics.

The Federal Risk Authorization and Management Program will send a draft baseline standard for FISMA high systems around the government for comment in the next month. The Defense Department is getting better at handling its contract data. The Government Accountability Office says 32 of its 33 components turned in an inventory review of their contracts. GAO also says more DoD components are following its recommendations to improve their contract reporting. Tim DiNapoli is Director of Acquisition and Sourcing Management Issues at GAO.
