The Senate is expected to vote late this afternoon on the nomination of Dr. Robert Groves to be the next director of the U.S. Census Bureau.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid last Friday filed a motion to close debate on Groves’ nomination last Friday.

The Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call reports that Groves’ nomination had been held up by Alabama Senator Richard Shelby and Louisiana Senator David Vitter.

Republicans are concerned that Groves would use statistical sampling to adjust the upcoming 2010 population count to account for undercounting of minorities.

Groves said in his confirmation hearing that he did not advocate the use of statistical sampling in the 2010 census.

Debate in the full Senate on Groves nomination is expected to begin around 4:30 p.m. Eastern, with a final vote expected before 6 p.m.
