When many people think of the NTSB, they picture investigators walking around scenes of deadly crashes searching for clues. The agency uses that information to come up with a likely explanation for the crash … and any tips for preventing similar disasters usually come out months or years later.

We spoke with NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman, who says now the board is working to flag problems before they happen.
