These are the stories Federal News Reporters are working on today.

  • Senior officials from the Defense Department will vote on the security technical requirements for the operating system that runs Apple’s iPhone and iPad. The security technical implementation guide, or STIG, could be approved in the next month. This would clear the way for military servicemen and women and civilians to use the new the Go Mobile app on these popular devices. Lieutenant Colonel Anmy Torres is the director of the Secure Go Mobile Services for DoD. She tells our own Jason Miller about how DoD is making it easier for soldiers and personnel to use smartphones for military business.
  • Ashton Carter, the Defense Department’s undersecretary for acquisitions says the Pentagon can buy things quickly when it really needs to. But when it comes to supporting overseas contingency operations, he says the country needs a dedicated, permanent “fast lane” that leapfrogs DoD’s notoriously slow methods of buying goods and services.
