The Defense Department is canceling plans to buy additional cargo helicopters from a Russian arms export agency that has supplied Syrian President Bashar Assad's military forces with arms and ammunition. 15 Russian-built Mi-17 helicopters were to be purchased next year at a cost of $345 million and then delivered to Afghanistan's national security forces. DoD has paid Rosoboronexport more than $1 billion since 2011 for 63 Mi-17s that have been delivered to Afghanistan or are on order.

Arnold Giammarco, a U.S. Army veteran who turned his life around after struggling with drug addiction is fighting his deportation. He says he should not have been expelled last year for a minor criminal record after honorably serving his country and living here legally for more than 50 years. He was deported to his native Italy over drug possession and larceny convictions, his attorneys said. The former Connecticut resident is seeking to reverse his deportation, arguing in a federal lawsuit filed Tuesday that immigration authorities never acted on his citizenship application in 1982.
Two new faces are joining the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program. IBM earned FedRAMP approval for its SmartCloud for Government service, the General Services Administration says it's a multi-tenant Infrastructure as a Service cloud computing system. The SmartCloud service earned the approval from Veris Group, one of FedRAMP's third party assessment organizations. Microsoft's Global Foundation Services and Windows Azure service also earned a provisional authority to operate from the FedRAMP Joint Authorization Board. The GSA says Microsoft won the authority to operate after working with the FedRAMP program management office and Secure Info, another third party assessment organization. The GSA says the authorization relied on FedRAMP baseline controls and FedRAMP templates.
The Army awards new contracts to bring commercial cloud services to about 100 thousand Army network users. The one-year, blanket purchase agreements will go to Microsoft and Google and will have four one-year option periods. Each company will offer 50 thousand subscriptions to their respective cloud services. The cloud networks will supplement the enterprise email and collaboration services offered by the Defense Information Systems Agency, which already serves more than 1 point 4 million Army users. The Army expects about 10 actual thousand Army users to qualify for the services already. The Army's acting chief information officer, Mike Krieger, says the contracts will not compete with DISA's enterprise system. Google says its new users can now attend classes and complete assignments using a tablet or smartphone.

FedRAMP's Joint Authorization Board is celebrating a milestone. The Board awarded its first joint infrastructure and platform cloud solution a Provisional Authority to Operate. The P-ATO is going to Microsoft's cloud infrastructure and the Windows Azure public cloud solution. FedRAMP's Joint Authorization Board includes cloud representatives from the Defense Department, the Homeland Security Department, and the General Services Administration. With the P-ATO, the Microsoft cloud options are pre-certified to meet federal security requirements and helps speed up the contracting process.
