He offered his condolences for the recent terrorist attacks in Volgograd, saying the United States stands with the Russian people against terrorism. He also assured Minister Shoygu that the United States stands ready to provide security assistance to Russia for the Winter Olympics in Sochi, if requested.

  • The Syrian Electronic Army (SEA) said hacked into Skype's social media accounts last week. Now the Internet calling service confirms it had been hit with a "cyber-attack" but said no user information was compromised. SEA posted a tweet posted on Skype's official Twitter feed that read: "Don't use Microsoft emails (hotmail, outlook). They are monitoring your accounts and selling the data to the governments. More details soon. #SEA"

  • Mandiant, the Virginia-based cyber-security firm than pinpointed a hacking unit in Shanghai that experts believe is part of the Chinese Army's cyber command has been sold. FireEye said that the purchase of privately held Mandiant would increase its ability to stop attacks in their early stages. The company valued the deal at nearly $1 billion.

  • If you serve the US military in places like Afghanistan and Iraq, you'll get imminent danger pay. But Bahrain, which is headquarters to the U.S. Fifth Fleet, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have been removed from that list. Lt. Col Steve Warren, Pentagon spokesman said the decision to drop more than 20 locales from the list followed a regular review and was not budget-driven.

  • China's says the U.S. should not have sent the last three Uighur Chinese inmates at the Guantanamo Bay detention center to Slovakia. The Chinese government claims they are terrorists. A spokesman says they are members of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, which Beijing labels a terrorist group and not only threaten China's security, but other countries as well.

  • "Cancer Knowledge Clouds" could soon connect researchers and the National Cancer Institute through data. It's part of NCI Cancer Genomics Cloud Pilots project. The agency wants to use next-generation cloud technology to create instant dialogues between the cancer research community. A contract pre-solicitation notice is already out to build three cancer cloud pilot programs. NCI plans to release a formal Broad Agency Announcement solicitation on or around January 13th. First though, it's offering an online, pre-proposal conference on January 6th. Anyone interested in making an offer to build a cloud system can go to the conference and ask questions or get some clarification on the requirements. NCI says the pilot projects will have three phases: Design, Implementation, and Evaluation.

  • About one thousand patients in the Riverside Health System of Virginia are victims of a privacy breach. A licensed practical nurse stole Social Security numbers and electronic medical records over a span of four years. The Daily Press reports the hospital discovered the breach after a random audit. Riverside is now contacting the victims of the data breach and trying to find new ways to secure its system. The Department of Health and Human Services also just reached a 150 thousand dollar settlement for another data breach with Adult and Pediatric Dermatology in Concord Massachusetts. Healthcare IT News reports someone stole an unencrypted thumb drive with medical records for more than two thousand people from the vehicle of a staff member.
