Today is a holiday for many, probably most, federal government workers. But in this post 9/11 world, lots of people in lots of government offices will be on the job as per usual.
It goes without saying that lots of working feds will be in defense, intelligence, health and safety fields. But there are also people out there doing things many of us don’t think about. While they may be out of sight, and out of our minds, this is just another day at the office.
The official holiday is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday (although he was actually born on Jan. 15).
Although banks will be closed, holidays are business-as-usual for most stores, restaurants, malls and service-type businesses.
So, if you are off today, enjoy. If you must work, take pride in the fact that somebody thinks you are critical enough, or dedicated enough, to be there. And if you are taking it easy, or working, let us know how you are spending the day. Inquiring minds want to know.
NEARLY USELESS FACTOID

Grades aren’t everything. During Dr. Martin Luther King’s first year at Crozer Theological Seminary in Upland, Pa., he only got a “C” in public speaking. Still, by his final year at seminary, he was named the class valedictorian.
