How likely is a proposed freeze on military pay?

Servicemembers do not fall under the two-year freeze of federal civilian pay proposed Monday by President Obama.

But White House officials have been evasive about a possible pay freeze for the troops, Stars & Stripes reports.

Fueling speculation on the matter, the co-chairs of the president’s panel on reducing the deficit have recommended a freeze on basic military pay and housing allowances for three years. The panel’s final report will be released Wednesday.

Troops are currently on track to receive a 1.4 percent pay raise next year, but only if Congress passes a defense spending bill by the end of the year. Otherwise, military pay will stay flat until the next Congress takes action.
