A U.S. Army Reserve 2nd Lt. Sam Kendricks won the bronze medal for men’s pole vaulting. He completed a jump of 19 feet, 2 inches on Aug. 15, during his first-ever Olympic competition.
Kendricks has broken a number of pole-vaulting records during his career. He broke the indoor pole-vaulting record at his alma mater, University of Mississippi, in addition to winning the 2013 and 2014 NCAA championships.
He set an Olympics Trials record with his jump of 19 feet, 5 inches, which earned him first place at the trials and a spot on the Olympic team. That jump was only 10 inches short of the world record.
