Turner hits for cycle, Nationals beat Rockies 15-12

DENVER (AP) — Trea Turner hit for the third cycle in Nationals history and drove in a career-high seven runs, helping Washington to a 15-12 win over the Colorado Rockies on a frigid Tuesday night.

Turner’s seven RBIs are tied for second-most in a single game in Nationals history. Daniel Murphy also had a big night, tying a career best by driving in five runs.

Enny Romero (2-1) earned the win by pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings a night after taking the loss.

German Marquez (0-1) was roughed up in his first start of the season, surrendering eight runs in four innings.

RAYS-ORIOLES

Rays scratch starter, use 5 relievers to 2-hit Orioles

BALTIMORE (AP) — Substitute starter Austin Pruitt combined with four other Tampa Bay relievers on a two-hitter, and the Rays capitalized on Wade Miley’s wildness in a 2-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night.

On another damp and chilly night at Camden Yards, Rays starter Erasmo Ramirez was a late scratch due to “uncertain weather conditions,” according to the team.

Pruitt, a rookie right-hander making his first major league start, allowed one hit in three innings. Danny Farquhar followed by getting two outs; Jumbo Diaz went 1 1/3 innings; Chase Whitley (1-0) contributed three perfect innings and Alex Colome worked the ninth for his fifth save.

Tampa Bay pitchers retired 17 straight batters before Chris Davis drew a two-out walk in the ninth. Colome then struck out Mark Trumbo to end it.

Baltimore’s lone hits were a double by Jonathan Schoop in the second and an infield hit by Davis in the fourth.

Miley (1-1) gave up only four hits in seven innings.

GREENBRIER CLASSIC-FIRST RESPONDERS

Greenbrier Classic to salute first responders

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (AP) — The PGA Tour’s Greenbrier Classic will honor first responders for rescue and recovery efforts during last June’s devastating floods in West Virginia.

Officials say on the tournament’s website that police officers, EMS, firefighters, National Guard members and others will be selected to serve as caddies for the tournament’s July 5 pro-am event at The Greenbrier resort. They also will be recognized during ceremonies on July 4.

The tournament will be held July 6 through 9 on the Old White TPC course.

The floods killed 23 people statewide, including 15 in Greenbrier County. The resort and the town of White Sulphur Springs were ravaged by flooding and last year’s Greenbrier Classic was canceled.

The Greenbrier hotel reopened two weeks after the floods.

NORTH CAROLINA-BERRY-NBA

UNC’s Berry withdrawing from draft to return for senior year

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina point guard and Final Four most outstanding player Joel Berry II is withdrawing from the NBA draft to return for his senior season.

The school announced Monday that Berry would join teammates Tony Bradley and Theo Pinson in declaring for the draft but wouldn’t hire an agent to maintain his college eligibility. But in a statement Tuesday, Berry said he had reversed course after conferring with his family and said he can prepare for the NBA by playing “against the best college competition in the country.”

Berry says, “There’s no reason to rush leaving school.”

He helped lead the Tar Heels to the program’s sixth NCAA championship earlier this month, scoring 22 points in the 71-65 win against Gonzaga in the title game on April 3.
