  • The Department of Homeland Security is getting ready to pilot a technology acquisition concept that will bundle several services into one. They call it workplace-as-a-service, and DHS is hoping it will help its components buy IT more efficiently. The concept would bundle technologies like virtual desktop infrastructure, mobile devices and smartphones into a single service contract that parts of Homeland Security could sign up for. DHS has also ordered all of its components to use enterprise services for commodity technology purchases.

Last year\'s audit found 161 issues in technology systems throughout the agency. Those problems ranged from a lack of disaster recovery plans to the inability to block former employees from accessing department IT systems.

  • Deputy secretaries now get quarterly scorecards on how their agency is meeting four IT security priorities, including continuous monitoring of agency networks and secure identity cards. Howard Schmidt, the White House cyber coordinator, said the goal is to increase accountability and make sure agencies are putting enough focus on these areas. Schmidt said he is also developing priorities for 2012, which includes getting cybersecurity legislation passed.
