Yes, people are still reading, but it’s becoming a more social activity. The Amazon Kindle has a new feature — “popular highlights” — and the New York Times reports that this might auger big changes. With “popular highlights,” even when a reader manages to turn off Twitter and the television and sit down to read a good book, there will a chorus of others turning the pages along with him, pointing out the good bits. Analysts wonder if this bodes well for the reader, citing studies that show that multi-tasking isn’t always good for the brain.
