OMB to close 137 data centers by end of year
The Office of Management and Budget has released a list of 137 data centers it plans to close by the end of the year.

137 federal data centers will close by the end of the year. CIO Vivek Kundra tells the Wall Street Journal the closures will take place at 16 agencies including the Department of Homeland Security, Commerce, Energy, Interior, Labor, State, Transportation, Health and Human Services, NASA, Treasury, USAID, Agriculture, Justice, the General Services Administration, Defense and Veterans Affairs.
The Defense Department will see the most closures – 52 in total, according to the Journal. Data centers in multiple states across the country are expected to close under the plan. (View the full list.)
At this time, OMB is not saying how many federal and contractor jobs, if any, may be lost with the closure of the data centers.
The administration wants to close 800 of the government’s more than 2,000 data centers by 2015.
Kundra and Jeffrey Zients, the White House’s chief performance officer, plan a forum at the White House today to unveil the plan.
