The Securities and Exchange Commission is asking 50 registered investment advisers and broker-dealers for more information about how they protect their systems from cyber attacks.

The Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations had previously announced that its 2014 exams would focus on cybersecurity.

The questions in the exam range from how frequently firms conduct risk assessments, to how their networks are protected and whether they follow the new cyber framework put out by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

The SEC says the examinations will help identify areas where the government and private industry can work together to help protect the financial sector. The SEC held a roundtable discussion about cybersecurity earlier this year.
