Defense is quietly taking on an expanding role in defending U.S. critical infrastructure from cyber attacks.
The Pentagon is quietly taking on an expanding role in cybersecurity. Defense News reports that the military is prepared to provide cyber expertise to other federal agencies – and even some private companies – to counter cyber attacks. The Pentagon’s cyber policy chief, Robert Butler, says that this is a break with previous policy. Homeland Security remains the lead government agency on cyber defense, but the new agreement with the Pentagon means DHS can take advantage of the military expertise at the Pentagon, and the intelligence expertise of the National Security Agency.
