Now that President Barack Obama has nominated Beth Cobert, the acting director of the Office of Personnel Management, to permanently lead the agency, Cobert will have to face the Senate. Preparing for a confirmation hearing is no easy task in any circumstance. OPM faces a plethora of problems both urgent and systemic.
Cobert has not testified before Congress since taking OPM’s helm in July. She replaced Katherine Archuleta, who stepped down after breaches of OPM databases left 21.5 million federal employees, job candidates and family members’ personal information exposed. The confirmation hearing will be Congress’ first opportunity to publicly ask the OPM chief about the agency’s response.
But it’s not the only issue that OPM is grappling with. Here are seven questions that senators should ask and Cobert should be prepared to answer:
