While Defense Secretary Robert Gates is staying on at the Pentagon, almost all of those directly under him are leaving.

The Senate Armed Services Committee held a confirmation hearing for four of those potential new leaders: William Lynn for Deputy Secretary of Defense; Robert Hale for Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller) and Chief Financial Officer; Michèle Flournoy for Under Secretary of Defense for Policy; and Jeh Charles Johnson for General Counsel.
